I’m a big fan of Bert Monroy’s Pixel Perfect – a weekly Photoshop video podcast. In a break from the usual format, this week Bert talks to photographer Stephen Johnson about the impact of digital photography.
The main area of discussion in this show revolves around what constitutes a ‘photograph’. Stephen believes that as soon as you alter a photo in any way it ceases to be a photograph, but becomes a form of digital artwork. An equally valid, but completely different art form.
The whole show is included below, or you can download it in different formats from the Revision3 web site.

1I think digital photography is absolutely amazing! It opens photography to all,
but
It certainly kills and a lot of a the magic involved in tape, dark rooms, chemicals and the waiting to see what amazing imagery you have captured

2I’ve grown up in the digital age and the thought of working with film scares me senseless – I don’t think I would take half as many pictures if I wasn’t using digital!

3Having been in Wedding Photography for nearly twenty years I have obviously experienced the change over to digital and empaphise Joe and with the lost magic.
Thing is the results from digital photography are awesome and we must move forward and make the best of the technology available.

4I aboslutely agree with Stephen Johnson. I was brought up on Ansell Adams, Edward Western, Paul Strand et al. and have gone through 2.25 square black & white negative material, 35mm colour transparencies and now into digital and I still treat my camera as if it was a big plate camera where you got very thing right before you pressed the button. Photoshop to me is where you tweek a little bit here and there and I use it very spariingly. But digital photography gives you much greater freedom of movement in whatever field you like to work.

5Eddie, take the plunge and give film a go, you’ll be amazed! There’s plenty of help out there.
The Flickr “I Use Film” group is one that has a huge following. They are organising a Buy Film Day on the 1st October this year to let the manufacturers know there are still lots of us out there.
I do use digital but have gone back to film over the last 9 months.
